Shelby Nelson Eagle Project

September 9, 2008 at 12:20 pm · Filed under Uncategorized

Worldwide Book Drive is excited to announce that Shelby Nelson will be working on his Eagle Project with us. Shelby is from Clinton Utah. He is a Senior at Clearfield High, loves music and to play the trombone. He also likes to work with his hands. He loves welding and is in his third year in school. He and his family love spending time together at their cabin near bear lake.

Shelby shared of his thoughts and feeling about why he felt a book drive is a worthy cause for his Eagle Project. Shelby said, “The reason why I chose the book drive is because I had a hard time reading when I was little. I didn’t like to read. My mom tried really hard to help me. As I got older I had to read in school and I just want others to get a chance to read and to be able to have a chance to love it and to learn all that they can. Reading is good for the mind and I like it now. With the book drive I have a chance to help others get the chance to read and learn new adventures.”

Thank you Shelby. We are looking forward to working with you!

Dallin Shepherd Completes Largest Eagle Scout Book Drive Ever!

August 25, 2008 at 10:06 am · Filed under Literacy, boy scouts, eagle scout

Dallin Shepherd drop off picDallin is a 12 year old boy scout from Farmington, Utah just completing his Eagle project. He likes many things and usually sticks with them to the end. He is a black belt in karate, has played the violin for 7 years and he is starting the 7th grade at Farmington Jr. High.

His project was a huge success! He has collected 5,696 books. Those are
broken down into the following categories: 2,690 books for adults; 945
educational books; 964 books for children; 62 reference books; 280 juvenilebooks; and 755 books for recycling (preliminary count). Dallin decided to do a book drive, after learning about Worldwide Book Drive, because he felt the project could benefit thousands of people all over the world. It is neat that some of the books are donated locally, and that many will make it to third world countries, where resources are so scarce. With the help of Tanner and Worldwide Book Drive, he was able to complete his entire application in under one week, and the entire project has been completed in under one month from start to finish!

Books for Africa Book Donation 30,000+

July 30, 2008 at 3:45 pm · Filed under Progress, Partners, Literacy

Worldwide Book Drive is excited to donate over 30,000 text books to books for Africa.

“Books For Africa receives new and used book donations for primary through post-secondary levels from public and private schools, libraries, publishers and the general public. Donated books are sorted and processed for shipping by volunteers working at BFA’s warehouse in St. Paul, Minnesota. Approximately 35,000 books are shipped in a 40-foot container. A 40-foot container sent to a sea port in Africa costs $9,000. Inland rates vary depending on destination and are dependent on quotes from shippers. Shipping is Books For Africa’s largest expense.

“Although Books For Africa has made tremendous progress in its mission, the book famine in Africa remains a reality. Where books are available, there are still very few. It is common across the continent to see five or six school children sharing one book. Empty library shelves are a constant reminder of Africa’s desperate need for printed materials. If we are to see the day when African school children are to have the books they need to learn the skills necessary to provide for themselves and others, BFA must continue to send millions of books.”

Worldwide Book Drive is pleased to support and further the impact of Books of Africa on literacy and education.
