Myanmar Book Aid
2,000 Myanmar libraries were destroyed in early May, 2008 when Cyclone Nargis devastated
the Irrawaddy Delta regions. Two million people were displaced, 135,000 lost their
lives and the entire country of 55 million was severely disrupted. Many NGOs stepped
forward, both international and national, to deal with health and hunger issues,
and the local communities displayed remarkable resourcefulness. In the face of initial
gloomy reports by international agencies, expectations of rapid recovery were very
low. However by September, recovery was apparent in most areas except for libraries.
At that time, an indigenous NGO, Myanmar Book Aid and Preservation Foundation, allied
with an American NGO, the Institute of the Rockies, to guide the Nargis Library
Recovery Project. Our first container of 50,000
books shipped in early April. We expect to deliver a container every two months
until our pledge is fulfilled. Myanmar, commonly called Burma in the West, has a
tradition of high literacy due to the important role of teaching monks; libraries
are sustained by them and donations of local families. Beyond recovery from the
cyclone, we expect our donated books to sustain community, school and college libraries
throughout the country.

Books For Africa
Books For Africa is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization with a mission to "end the
book famine in Africa." Since 1988, Books For Africa has shipped over 20 million
books to 45 African countries and is the largest supplier of donated books to the
African continent. Books For Africa partners with local non-governmental organizations
in Africa to distribute the books to where the need is greatest. One container of
books can impact up to 500,000 students in Africa over the life of the books. In
most areas in Africa, there are no books and students who can attend school learn
by memorization. Books For Africa is working to give access to information to adults
and children throughout Africa that have previously had no hope of rising out of
poverty. Books For Africa supplies shipments of books to rural school libraries,
orphanages, adult literacy programs, and community resource centers. Books For Africa
strives to help create a culture of literacy and provide the tools of empowerment
to the next generation of parents and leaders in Africa.
